Cliffs of Torres: discover the three towers

Within the Parque da Guarita there are three distinct natural towers that are known as:

Middle Tower or Morro das Furnas

It is the highest tower in the park, reaching 48 meters at sea level. She is the most imposing and has a slender, tapered shape. Torre do Meio is one of the main attractions of the park and offers incredible panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean.

At the top there is a small trail that crosses the hill on one side, entering Praia da Cal and going out to Praia da Guarita on the other side, the walk is a pleasant invitation to be dazzled by nature, see the sea and its infinity in the horizon, in addition to accompanying the passage of whales and dolphins during certain times of the year.

At the top there is a natural lagoon called Lagoinha dos Suspiros, depending on the season there is not always water, but you will see a capital that is right next to it.

The best-known legend of Morro das Furnas is related to Furna do Diamante, which talks about a Mermaid who appears on full moon nights and who can reveal where the precious diamond is hidden. In addition to this detail, if you step hard with your foot on the ground you will notice that it makes a hollow noise, as the legend means that the treasure is in that part of the hill, but no one has ever managed to find it.

south tower

Located south of the Middle Tower, it is smaller in height but still impressive. It is approximately 40 meters high and offers a privileged view of the cliffs and the sea.

The South Tower is one of the iconic landscapes of the park and is much visited by tourists, because to access the tower you have to climb a 124 steps staircase that will take you to the top. The route is very closed and which makes it even more charming, and when you get there, you will be dazzled by so much beauty. A perfect view of the entire beach and hills.

North Tower – Morro do Farol

Torre Norte is better known as Morro do Farol, and this is not part of Praia da Guarita. Morro do Farol is part of one of the most visited places by tourists, from the top it is possible to see Praia Grande, Prainha, Praia da Cal and Morro da Guarita, in addition to the perfect view of the city and the Serra Geral.

A tip is to go check out the sunset or sunrise, in either situation they are incredible and unforgettable moments. The hill is also very popular for diving. free fly as paraglider and it is also from there that, during the winter, it is possible to see the right whales.

In addition, access to the hill is super easy, you can go by car and you don't have to pay anything to access it.

What to do at Praia da Guarita?

Go to Guarita beach

Praia da Guarita Torres RS
Guarita Beach

Some days in the summer the water gets so crystal clear that it is possible to visualize the corals and stones at the bottom of the sea.

One of the advantages of going to Guarita beach is that it is between the hills, providing good shade in the early morning or late afternoon, and it is out of sight on days of strong wind. Of course it will depend on which side you stay on.

The stretch of sand is very small, around 300 meters, which makes it easier for mothers to take care of their children in the sand.

The recommendation is to always accompany the children when entering the water, during the summer there are lifeguards, however, it is good to always be aware.

Tip: bathing very close to the hills is dangerous, there are shellfish (mussels) and stones, if you lose your balance or even the notion of your distance, you can cut yourself and even drown. Respect the signs and guidance given by the lifeguards!

Surfing at Praia da Guarita

Surfing at Praia da Guarita Torres RS

The waters of Guarita are the best for surfing.

City surfers or tourists who frequent the beaches talk a lot about “give Guaritinha a bath”, affectionate way to call her.

Tip: if you are not used to surfing on this beach, don't go alone🇧🇷 Often the sea can take you too far inland, and you will have to row to Praia da Cal, which is next to Morro do Meio, and for that you will need to have knowledge and good physical condition.

Picnic at Praia da Guarita

Legend of Praia da Guarita Torres RS

Many years ago there was a sign telling the legend of the beach, lucky for us that we made a record before it was removed or torn from the place!

The conclusion of this legend is that when you walk on Morro das Furnas and force your foot, hitting it on the ground, you will feel as if the hill were hollow, because the gold is down there. Many people tried to find the gold and access it through the diamond cave (find it on the map above), however many ended up dying.

What are the hills of Torres?

Morro do Farol, Morro do Meio, Morro da Guarita, Torre Sul and Morro das Furnas.

When and how were the towers of Parque da Guarita formed?

The towers of Parque da Guarita were formed over millions of years of geological processes. They are mainly composed of sandstone, which is a sedimentary rock formed by the deposition of sediments over time.

During the geological period known as the Upper Triassic, between 200 and 250 million years ago, the region where Parque da Guarita is located today was covered by shallow seas. Over millions of years, the deposition of sediments and the movement of tectonic plates led to the formation of sandstone layers.

Over time, erosion caused by the action of winds, rain and sea waves carved the layers of sandstone, giving rise to the beautiful rock formations that are now known as the towers of Parque da Guarita. This erosion process continues to this day, albeit on a much smaller scale.
