Brief history – Malacara Canyon
It was through this giant, in addition to other canyons, that the old drovers descended through the back of their mules to the city of Praia Grande to do what they used to call barter🇧🇷 Exchange of food or products they needed.
They went down with cattle, pigs and went up with flour, rice and products that they did not produce in the mountains.
There are some places that still have historical records. The Federal Institute of Santa Rosa, in its museum, has several items that were used by the tropeiros.
How to get to Malacara Canyon
The best way to get to the canyon is to get to Praia Grande. If you are in Porto Alegre, I advise you to take the Br 101, it will be around 205 km.
However, if you intend to visit all the canyons, you can go through Cambará do Sul and go down to Praia Grande. The distance from POA to Cambará is 192 km and to Praia Grande is another 38 km.
Where to stay in Praia Grande SC
O Booking is our partner on all our itineraries, so it would be no different for us to share with you the best options with no-fee booking and different stays with delicious breakfasts 🙂 Check out some options by clicking on the banner below:
Booking.comTrail of Natural Pools
The only trail authorized to be done in the park is the Natural Pools trail. Only allowed from Wednesday to Monday and with restrictions due to the number of tourists.
For this reason, schedule with a guide not to miss your trip. The guide provides leggings for protection against snakes or a bump of your shin on the stones.
Tips:
- wear sneakers with non-slip soles or hiking boots
- confortable clothes;
- sunscreen;
- repellent;
- cap or hat;
- water and some snack.
Difficulty level: easy to average
The trail is on a path over the bed of a river without water most of the time. In addition, full of stones and in some parts with water.
The route is approximately 4 km and takes around 3 hours. During the tour the guide tells the history of the place and it is possible to take many pictures.
At the end of the trail, you can take a delicious bath in a natural well with a waterfall.
Tip: put on thin clothes so that it dries easily, if you want to take a shower or take another change of clothes in a backpack.
When to do the trail
It is possible to do it any time of the year!
But we advise, if possible, to do it during the summer, the hottest season. Because that's the only way you'll be able to enjoy a river bath in the crystalline waters.
But if you don't have problems with the cold, prefer the winter because there will be less demand and the prices of inns will be more affordable.
Finally, I hope it helped with the tips to get to know this incredible place! If you've been, share your experience with us!
