The name “Palmares” was chosen in the 18th century, by the Portuguese colonizers, who realized that there was a large amount of butiatuvas (or butiatubas), whose set forms what the Portuguese called “palmares".
In the word butiatuba, “tuba” means “place” and “butiá” means “plant”, in the Tupi-Guarani language. It is a plant of the palm family, which adapt well to the soil and climate of the region.
As the name Palmares already existed in Brazil, the term “do Sul” was added around 1950.
