If you are planning the last week trip in the Pacific Northwest or just looking for a quick vacation.

Portland is a great weekend getaway in the USA!

Oh, and if you're really in the mood for donuts, I prefer the Blue Star Donuts than the Voodoo Donuts. But feel free to try both. 😉

From Powell's City of Books to iconic landmarks, here are the best things to do in Portland!

Powell's City of Books and the Pearl District

When it comes to things to do in Portland, you'll find Powell's iconic City of Books at the top of every list.

This multi-level bookstore is a maze of the best new and used books on the planet. In fact, it's the biggest independent bookstore on the planet and that's something Portland is proud of.

The bookstore is located in the Pearl District. Just between Old Town/Chinatown and Downtown you'll find this neighborhood gem. Explore art galleries, boutiques, craft breweries and culinary delights, then head to Jamison Square Park for a peaceful oasis.

International Rose Test Garden

home to more than 10,000 rose bushes and countless flowers, this is a privileged place to stop and smell the roses. There are over hundreds of different types of roses here. The scale of it all will take your breath away.

This place has existed since the First World War, when specialists from all over the planet came together to send all their varieties of roses for a truly world-class collection.

Pittock Mansion

In 1860, the Pittock family began The Oregonian, and is still one of the most widely read newspapers today. Within a few years, the family was famous across the state and ready to build their own castle.

In 1914, they began construction on the Pittock Mansion. This epic abode was perfectly located for unparalleled views of Portland, the Willamette River and the Cascade Mountains.

5th Avenue food cart pod

From gluten-free Brazilian-Latin-Korean fusion to Japanese sandwiches, you won't find a more diverse menu than at 5th Avenue Food Cart Pod.

It's one of the best places to go in Portland to discover unusual local foods.

Take a food tour to get a little bit of everything, or eat on the go. And plan ahead. Catering to the downtown office crowd, many of these places are only open at lunchtime. Check out the full schedule and times before you go.

Be sure to learn about the Shanghai Tunnels!

Chinatown Old Town

This historic downtown district is a fascinating mix of old and new, western and eastern. It's one of the city's oldest neighborhoods and is filled with teahouses, beautiful architecture and some of the best food in Portland.

Used from the mid-19th century through the 1940s, the Shanghai Tunnels have a sordid history straight out of Hollywood.

You will absolutely never forget the stories you hear on these bizarre rides. The Shanghai Tunnels, also known as The Old Portland Underground, are easily one of the most unusual and best things to do in Portland.

St. John's Bridge

This iconic steel suspension bridge spans 1,219 meters over the Willamette River. On a clear day, you can catch a view of Mt. Hood from there and explore the green space below.

Is photo option essential and if you have more time, walk or cycle and explore the wider region.Curiosity: This bridge was actually built as a "test" to the Golden Gate. The same people who created America's most famous bridge also worked on it.

go vintage shopping

When it comes to vintage shopping, Portland is unbeatable. In fact, this city has more second-hand stores per capita than anywhere else in the world.

From records to rain boots, you'll find one-of-a-kind pieces everywhere here.

brewery tour

Portland is one of the Beer Capitals of the World. Long before everyone else was doing it, Portland was leading the way (not always the case with these hipsters!). In the 1980's they started producing world class craft beers.

Since then, brewski lovers began to call the city Beervana.

Just within the city limits, you'll find over 50 breweries. Explore Oregon's unique hops and that special Pacific Northwest water.

There are many options, but if you only do one, head over to Widmer Brothers Brewing for a guided tour. If you're more of a whiskey lover, head straight to Multnomah Whiskey Library.

Planning tip: Portland is one of my top picks for solo travel because there are so many organized tours like this one. Whether it's a brewery, a food tour or a museum, there are countless ways to meet other travelers and have fun while traveling solo.

Lan Su Chinese Garden

Portland has a sister city in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, China. After establishing this partnership, artists came from Suzhou and created Lan Su. The aim is to give the people of Oregon a taste of the famous Ming Dynasty gardens in Jiangsu.

The Chinese Gardens of Lan Su are a perfect place for peaceful afternoons in the sun (or clouds!). And they have a busy calendar of events and programs so check them out before you do.

witch's castle

walk through forest park to Witch's Castle aka The Stone House and Macleay Park Shelter.

It is about a 15-minute walk from Upper Macleay Parking. While it's not far, it's a bit of a walk, so come prepared.

There are countless legends about the infamous Witch's Castle and the surrounding forest. Read about history online, especially my favorite Oregon tale of Romeo and Juliet.

Bonus

Choosing the best things to do in Portland was an impossible mission! There are so many hidden treasures and must-see attractions. I can't end this list without adding some of my other favorites that are worth checking out if you still have time.

Portland's Saturday Market in Old Town

The biggest market of craftsmanship of the United States is in Portland (of course!).

If you're lucky enough to be in town on a Saturday, be sure to pay a visit. You'll find the open air market at Tom McCall Waterfront Park every Saturday from 10am to 5pm.

Day trip to waterfalls

Perfect for couples trips, girlfriend getaways or solo trips, an Oregon trip will show you the best of the best.

If you're pressed for time and can only take a day trip out of town, head east from Portland to the Columbia River Gorge and see the magical Multnomah Falls.

You can also continue on an easy hike to Wahclella Falls.

Or venture across icy creeks and the infamous “log jam” to reach Lower Oneonta Falls. Of course, keep in mind that this is the Pacific Northwest! That means bringing a raincoat and a good pair of hiking boots.
