In the United States, it is easy to drive, and the highways are large, very well maintained and have very clear signs.

Although you come from a country where you drive on the left, you will have to be more attentive than those who regularly drive on the right.

In today's post, we share our driving experience in the United States, tips, driving rules, car rentals and other recommendations for first-time travelers or the curious.

Tips for driving in the United States

  • Drive on the right side of the road;
  • the allowed limit of alcohol in the blood (after drinking alcohol) is a maximum of 0.08% (but not in all states), the ideal is: if you drink, don't drive!
  • Board of stop is to be respected, so: stop!
  • wear a seat belt;
  • respect the speed limits, on most roads it is 120km/h and within large centers 100km/h;
  • if you have children or babies, always have a safety seat.

US State and Federal Laws

One of the things you have to keep in mind in America is state laws and federal laws. The first are state-by-state and may be different, and the second are laws that apply equally across the country.

Most traffic laws are determined at the state level so they can vary from state to state. As a result, you'll see speed limits, driving age or the amount of alcohol you may have in your blood.

Getting Around in the USA

The easiest way to go on a road trip in the United States is with a rental car or motorhome (RV, van, or trailer) 🇧🇷 This is because US roads are easy to drive.

Most rental cars already have a built-in GPS with up-to-date maps. But if you rent one without GPS, my recommendation is to have internet on your cell phone to use Google Maps.

If you don't want to drive, you have two options:

  1. Travel across the United States by bus or train. They have a bus and train system that takes you to the most important points in the country.
  2. Get to a big city like Los Angeles, Las Vegas or San Francisco and take excursions/guided tours with Civitatis or Get your Guide 🇧🇷 You can find tours with or without a guide.

The downside of these two options is that you are dependent on third-party scheduling for your trip. And it's all slower than if you were in your own car or vehicle.
