Easily one of the most beautiful destinations in the United States, Hawaii is one of my favorite beach destinations. Whether you're hopping from island to island or exploring Ilha Grande's endless array of wonders, this enchanting archipelago will steal your heart.
From sampling the local cuisine to finding the perfect vantage point to immerse yourself in the island's endless natural beauty, you'll find yourself with a long wish list.

Be sure to try the local food.
Already in love with your local poké restaurant? That's just the tip of the iceberg! From treats like shaving ice to Spam Musubi, which sounds weird but is amazing, Hawaii is a culinary paradise.
Thanks to diverse international influences from Japan, Phillanaipehine, China among other countries, Hawaiian cuisine has truly unique offerings.
Adding to the cool fusion cooking style, the rich soil produces a wide variety of local fruits and vegetables that are fully adopted in the many farm-to-table restaurants.
The Big Island
Don't try to visit too many islands in one trip
There are so many irresistible destinations that it's hard not to want to run from one topical oasis to another, but take a deep breath! The real beauty of Hawaii is the laid-back lifestyle.
Operate on island time and give yourself the opportunity to appreciate the true beauty of the island.
The islands are bigger than you think and many of their greatest treasures are hidden away. Plan to visit only one or at most two islands during a single trip. Forget checking things off a to-do list and simply embrace the little things that make Hawaii so special.
Use reef-proof sunscreen
I've talked before about how crucial reef-safe sunscreen is, and I was thrilled to see Hawaii jump on the bandwagon. In fact, the state has banned sunscreen with oxybenzone and octinoxate because they cause such widespread damage to coral reefs.
When you're shopping for your sunscreen there, you're all set. Bringing cream from home? Take a look at the ingredients. If you love the beauty of Hawaii's oceans, protect them with reef-proof sunscreen.

understand the weather
While Hawaii's weather is amazing, it's also very variable. It can start to rain at any time, especially during the rainy season from November to March.
Fortunately, most storms occur at night and many afternoon showers disappear as quickly as they came.
That said, pay attention to the forecast of the day. Be aware that every island has a dry side and a wet side. When exploring by car, bring a breathable raincoat, a towel, and a quick-drying change of clothes.
Do not leave valuables in the car
Other than that spare raincoat, don't leave anything in your car. While Hawaii is a safe destination, many tourists are guilty of leaving expensive camera gear, bags, and other expensive gear in their car. This will make you a target for theft.
Leave your expensive gear back at the hotel or take it with you when you get out of the car. If you absolutely need to store things in the car, keep them locked in the trunk where they are out of sight.
Check conditions before walking
Take a look at the weather forecast and while you're at it, research the tides as well. Certain stretches of beach are difficult or impossible to cross during high tide, so plan ahead.
Have some money with you
From small fruit stands to banana bread carts (a must-stop!), you'll find numerous little shops dotted along the road. They are a great way to sample the impressive array of local artisanal fruits, vegetables and goodies.
Many of the small vendors don't accept cards, so always have some cash and change on you.
Rent a car
All my fondest memories of Hawaii are getting off the beaten path. There are unforgettable hidden coves and breathtaking vantage points that you can only arrive by car, so get your own set of wheels.
It's easy to rent a car straight from the airport and be on your way, so plan ahead.
Learn about Polynesian culture
Avoid the tourist traps and immerse yourself in authentic Hawaiian culture. This place is unlike any other place in the United States and it's good to know!
Explore local cultural centers or join a tour with a local who can show you a side of Hawaii you may never have discovered on your own.
And, of course, go to the mandatory luau! They are a central part of Hawaiian culture and an excellent opportunity to indulge in amazing local food.
Helpful tip:
As you are planning tours and luaus, I recommend booking them towards the end of your trip. With the time change, you will experience a bit of jet lag for the first few days, so operate on your own schedule until you get used to local time.
Water shoes can be a lifesaver
Water shoes will save your feet in and out of the water.
Bring a good pair of water shoes for any time you go for a walk in the water, explore coral reefs or play water sports. It's all too easy to step on a sea urchin or get a cut from something sharp in the deep blue beyond.
