Discover the Ballooning Events
Hot air ballooning is a fascinating sport that involves skill, strategy and the influence of weather conditions. During the championships, different events are chosen by judges and pilots, always taking into account the weather at the time of the competition. Learn about some of the main events:
🦊 Fox Hunting (HH)
In this event, a “fox” balloon takes off first and sets the course for the competitors to follow. The goal is to launch a mark as close as possible to the “X” target, which will be positioned by the “fox” after landing, at a distance of up to two meters in the direction of the wind. The shortest distance between the mark and the target determines the winner.
🔑 key proof
One of the most exciting competitions! A key to a brand new car is attached to the top of a pole that is between 6 and 10 meters high. The pilots have to take off at least 3 km away and, without touching the ground, try to reach the key with their hands. The pilots' skills are tested to the maximum, as they have to fly very close to the ground.
🎯 FlyIn (FIN)
Competitors choose their own launch site and must throw a marker as close as possible to a previously defined target. If an “X” is present, the marker must move closer to it. The accuracy of the distance to the target determines the result.
🏆 Gordon Bennett Memorial (GBM)
In this event, pilots must launch their mark within a scoring area, trying to get as close as possible to the determined target. As in other events, the shortest distance between the mark and the target determines the best placement.
📏 Minimum Distance (MIN)
After a minimum flight time, competitors must launch their marker as close as possible to the initial take-off point. The goal is to demonstrate control and planning to return to the starting location with precision.
⏳ To Target with Time Window (CRAT)
Here, pilots must throw the mark within a valid area and as close as possible to a set target. Unlike other events, this one has specific time windows for scoring. Timing and positioning strategy are essential.
🎯 Judge Declared Target (JDG)
In this event, the judge chooses a previously marked target, and competitors must throw their mark as close as possible to that point. As always, the shorter the distance to the target, the better the score.
✈️ FlyOn (FON)
Unlike other tests, here the pilot himself chooses and declares a target during the flight. The score is based on the accuracy of the launch of the mark in relation to the chosen target. To validate the attempt, the competitor must register his target at the previous mark.
🎵 Waltz of Hesitation (HWZ)
This mode offers multiple options of pre-marked targets. Pilots must choose one of them during the flight and launch their mark as close as possible. The shortest distance from the selected target defines the best performance.
Each ballooning event requires technique, knowledge of the wind and a lot of precision. If you haven't yet experienced this sport, it's worth watching the competitions and being enchanted by the incredible flights over Torres, RS! 🚀🎈
