Ready or not, the end of the year is coming! Whether that means fun parties and hangovers or quiet nights and New Year's resolutions, the big day is just around the corner. If you're looking for a particularly epic celebration for the New Year, some cities are known for taking things to the surreal.
Here are the best holiday destinations!
New York, USA
Brave the crowds and ring in the New Year in New York's world-famous Times Square to watch the ball drop. The night will keep you entertained with performances by top artists, fireworks and tons of confetti!
sydney, australia
Sydney Harbor is definitely the place to be on NYE in Australia. Not only are the views of the harbor incredible, but also a fantastic fireworks show! There are also many hotels and restaurants overlooking the harbor that offer something for everyone.
Hong Kong
Because Hong Kong is a melting pot of many cultures and traditions, they celebrate the New Year twice! The calendar year New Year's celebration includes a spectacular fireworks show over HK Victoria Harbour. No matter where you are in the city, the party lasts all night!
Cusco, Peru
For a unique cultural experience, head to Cusco for New Year's Eve! Every year, crowds gather in the main square, Plaza de Armas, and street vendors sell good luck symbols for the New Year. Don't forget to wear yellow, as everything from clothing, hats, to snacks are decorated in vibrant colors.
Taipei, Taiwan
While it's true that most cities have an incredible fireworks display for NYE, Taipei is probably the most unique. Taipei 101 (at one point the tallest building in the world) begins the countdown, and as it enters the final stage, the building itself lights up floor by floor from bottom to top, making Taipei 101 the biggest New Year countdown clock in the world! After that, the actual building sets off fireworks along with a light show that is seriously unlike anything you've ever seen!
Rio de janeiro Brazil
After Carnival, New Year's Eve is Rio's biggest party of the year. There are several free festivals during the day and many people gather on the beach to place candles and flowers in the ocean in honor of Iemanjá, the Afro-Brazilian goddess of water. At night, DJs and bands open the official stages along Copacabana beach. By the way, Brazilians know how to party!
Reykjavik, Iceland
This celebration is all about the lights! In the northernmost capital of the world, they get some fireworks displays. In addition, almost every family in the city buys fireworks and makes bonfires in the streets. If you're really lucky, you'll catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. Sunset starts around 4pm here, so there's plenty of time to watch the sky light up in celebration!
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
It's no secret that Dubai strives to be the biggest and the best, and the same certainly goes for celebrating the New Year. You can choose to go all out and attend a black-tie event overlooking the city's beautiful display or wander around to look out over the Dubai Fountain and Burj Khalifa. Either way, you're in for a visual experience!
Berlin, Germany
The stretch between Victory Column and Brandenburg will be packed with hedonists and hipsters, all waiting for live bands, DJs and fireworks to set the stage for this legendary outdoor party.
London, England
Grab a beer and head to the River Thames, where the rafts, as well as the base of the London Eye, set off fireworks. And, as always in London, its famous clubs are not to be missed. If you're in good shape the next day, be sure to catch the famous New Year's Eve parade, one of the biggest events of the year in London!
